Nicki Minaj Is a Dark Empress In The New Video For Her Icy Queen Track "Hard White."

Nicki Minaj is a dim sovereign in the new video for her icy Queen track "Hard White." The Mike Ho-directed clip, which was discharged on Thursday night (Jan. 31), opens with a great Minaj strutting down a neon walkway in the dark wearing a shimmering silver cape before jumping to a dark image of her in a flowing, goth-y black dress with a spiky crown on her head.

"Work hard just to get half back/ (Used to) work hard just to get half back/ (Now I'm) gettin' to it that way/ Straight up, straight up," Minaj raps over the grinding !Illmind beat. A bit early for Halloween, the American Horror Story-style visual is filled with spooky imagery, from dead crows with bleeding beaks to rows of spent shell casings and groups of ashen-faced zombies. Through it all, Minaj sits on a throne in her silver Gaultier metal bodysuit and espouses the value of grinding while the undead writhe around her.

About "Hard White."
Leaked in April 2018 under the title, “Half Back,” the track was mysteriously made available on a Russian streaming service. The song was renamed and remastered to be featured on Queen.
During an interview with Zane Lowe, Nicki was asked about the track, and she stated that it was recorded early 2017 (late February – early March) during Paris Fashion Week probably, the same time “No Frauds” was recorded. This debunked the controversy about the song being targeted toward Cardi B.
On January 31st, 2019, Nicki announced “Hard White” to be the fifth single off Queen, with the official music video dropping the next day.

What have the artists said about the song?
Verified producer !llmind spoke to Billboard magazine about the making of the song:

"From what I remember, I think Boi-1da finished it like I wanna say summer of last year or maybe even earlier. I remember working on some of the melodies for that song back in late 2016 early 2017. When me and Boi-1da collaborate, we don’t really know who the artist is yet, we kind of just work on beats. That was one of those beats that we worked on. He sent it over to Nicki and she used it and it came out crazy. I wasn’t able to be in the studio when she did it, but I knew it was coming out at some point. It’s funny because the original title of the track was different. It wasn’t “Hard White.” It was called “Half Back."
It’s Nicki in rare form. It’s what she does best. She’s one of the few top-tier artists that’s left that’s like really rapping. She’s not really built off of a gimmick or anything like that. She’s really respected as a rapper. I think she’s one of the illest, man. Not just for female rappers, but just rappers in general. She’s just got bars.
I was happy that the track ended up being just one of those songs that just showcases her rap abilities. She’s talking her shit. That’s personally my favorite version of Nicki, when she just gets on a record and talks her shit. I’m glad it was one of those, and it ended up being one of the few bangers where she’s just talking her shit on the Queen album. She did her thing. Source

What has engineer Aubry "Big Juice" Delaine said about the song?

Delaine told Rolling Stone:
The part about the mirror, when she does that answer back — ‘you the fucking fairest, Nicki!’ — I knew I was going to put a different effect on that voice to give it a supernatural vibe. It adds to the character she creates in the booth. I try to help give each character a different voice.
